She is of Mexican-American heritage and is American in nationality. Since the age of a child, she's had a keen interest in playing sports. Gerina began playing golf at the age of fifteen. Gerina attended Goddard High School. She was the winner of New Mexico's state golf championship. In addition to the sport of volleyball, she played on a state-level. She enrolled in Texas's University of Texas, Texas in the academic year. In her senior year, she won every tournament she participated. During her undergraduate career she was named Conference USA individual champion player of the year and UTEP Female Athlete Of The Year.
